Thinking about coxing in college? Want to learn more about what it takes to be a confident, impactful, and successful cox for your crew? The University of Wisconsin Men’s Coxswain Camps are designed to help high school coxswains improve their technical, communication, and leadership skills, all with the goal of helping their crews increase effectiveness and efficiency on and off the water. This camp will provide an informative and fun introduction to competitive collegiate coxing. A typical day for cox campers will consist of two small group instruction and discussions sessions with coaches combined with three workout sessions on and off the water to put their skills into action.
Cox campers will have opportunities on the water on Lake Mendota and on land inside the state of the art Porter Boathouse in our moving water tank to practice their skills. Campers can expect to gain greater knowledge in areas including: clear and effective communication, shell safety and steering, recognizing and providing technical feedback, preparing to race and compete, helping lead and run efficient and effective practices, leadership and motivation, and building great relationships with their teammates. Campers will review recordings of top US coxswains and receive feedback from coaches on their own recordings. Cox campers will leave Madison more confident in themselves and their ability to support their crews.
In addition to skilling and drilling, cox campers will have the opportunity to race in 8s and 4s with the goal of maximizing boat speed. Planned outings are scheduled to explore UW-Madison’s beautiful campus, including activities at Camp Randall Stadium, Memorial Union, and State Street. Open to any and all entrants entering grades 9-12 in the Fall of 2026.
Note: If you are new to the sport of rowing or have not coxed before, we recommend you check out our Boys Rowing Summer Camp (linked above), which provides an introduction to the sport of rowing.
